Crooked Timber is a new theatre company set up in 2009 by Gemma Khawaja. The company is based in Norwich, Norfolk.

The company specialises in producing small scale touring shows for family audiences, combining traditional storytelling and puppetry with innovative shadow effects and video.

Gemma Khawaja is an accomplished performer specialising in children’s theatre and puppetry. Gemma is also a singer and guitarist and has worked nationally as a musician, puppeteer and performer for leading theatre companies touring the UK.

Gemma’s interest in puppet theatre began at university. Upon completing an Honours degree in Drama 2001, Gemma furthered her skills in puppetry by learning traditional puppet making and performance techniques at Norwich Puppet Theatre.

Gemma’s experience as a performer for UK based children’s theatre companies combined with her puppet making skills, led her to explore and begin devising her own original creative work and to set up Crooked Timber Theatre company.

In August 2011 Gemma took up the part time post of Education and Outreach officer at Norwich Puppet Theatre. Gemma now divides her time between being part of the Puppet Theatre’s creative team and continuing the work of Crooked Timber Theatre.
